New Technology Debuts at ASMS 2026

Thermo Fisher Scientific has rolled out a next gen set of mass spectrometry platforms along with artificial intelligence powered software that is meant to help scientists sort through complicated scientific data faster, sort of more cleanly. The announcement happened at the 2026 American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Conference, and at that event they also showed off their newest improvements, across research, drug development, and even lab testing . You know, the whole idea is to make the workflow feel less tedious, while still keeping the results reliable.

New Orbitrap Platforms Expand Research Capabilities

The company came out with the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Tribrid Apex and the Orbitrap Excedion mass spectrometers, plus some other Orbitrap based solutions. The idea is to back a broad lineup of scientific tasks, like proteomics, multiomics, biologics investigations, genetic medicine development, environmental testing, food safety work, and pharmaceutical analysis too. 

As Thermo Fisher says, researchers are doing more and more often with larger, more complex datasets. The new instruments are made to deliver top tier data quicker, and to let scientists reach better informed decisions earlier during the research and development phase.

AI Software Designed to Simplify Data Analysis

A major part of the launch is leaning into AI enabled software, like sorta software tools for researchers. Thermo Fisher rolled out a few new software capabilities, including Proteoform Studio, Proteome Discoverer 3.4, and BioPharma Finder 5.5, and it says these can speed up proteomics analysis, make mass spectrometry results easier to interpret and even help with more advanced protein characterization.

Overall, the idea here is that the software is meant to cut down the time researchers spend poring over datasets while still helping them pull out meaningful takeaways from experiments that keep getting more complicated, step by step. Thermo Fisher also pointed to some recent acquisitions such as MSAID and Proteinaceous, which add more AI driven analytical functions, in a way that should expand what the platform can do.

Labs these days often have a hard time handling all that mass spectrometry data, it just piles up faster than people expect. Thermo Fisher has been trying to tackle those headaches with software that kind of centralizes the whole workflow and makes it easier to access for more than just a few specialists. Before that, there was Chromeleon, which was made to bring mass spectrometry and chromatography work under one roof, more like an enterprise ready setup, so not everything was scattered across different tools.

They say the newer AI enabled technologies keep pushing that same direction by helping labs process much larger datasets more quickly, and also with more assurance, like you can trust the outcomes a bit more even when the volume goes up.
