OpenAI Shocks the AI World by Releasing GPT-5.6 Sol After White House Pressure

OpenAI Opens Advanced AI Model to Everyone
The OpenAI project has finally rolled out the most recent version of their AI program called GPT-5.6 Sol. It was released for both commercial use and personal use, whereas previously only selected government partners were to be able to make use of the model. This public release occurred just two weeks after the Trump government requested OpenAI to limit access to the model.
GPT-5.6 Sol is the latest addition to OpenAI's portfolio of AI technology and is distinguished by its state-of-the-art features in computer security and cybersecurity studies. As such, the model has been drawing the increasing interest of US officials because of its sophisticated functions.
Initial Restrictions Raised Safety Questions
OpenAI revealed in June that GPT-5.6 Sol would be accessible only to organizations that have been cleared by the US government at first. The step is taken due to the increasing concerns in Washington about the possible dangers that might emerge from advanced AI models that may be used for research or hacking purposes.
Nevertheless, according to OpenAI, there were no objections from the government on making the system more accessible before its official launch on Thursday. Thus, it was decided to make the system available to everybody.
White House Says Approval Was Never Required
As per an official at the White House, there was no need for OpenAI to seek governmental permission to deploy GPT-5.6 Sol. As the official put it, the conversations between the administration and the AI companies are voluntary, and not mandatory.
What’s more, it needs to be pointed out that even though the government is keeping an eye on advanced AI systems, it is doing nothing to stop companies from releasing their models.
Growing Government Focus on Powerful AI
The news shows the growing participation of the US government in monitoring advanced AI.
At about the same time when OpenAI had been restricted by the government, Anthropic, another AI company, was ordered to prevent people from other countries from accessing its best AI models. The company disabled access to all of its users until the government lifted the restrictions on June 30 after evaluating the issues of security.
This demonstrates that the federal authorities are increasingly interested in AI systems that are able to conduct complex cybersecurity tasks.
What the Public Launch Means
With the advent of GPT-5.6 Sol, OpenAI has managed to go from being operationally limited to being entirely open and available to organizations and individuals. With this move, OpenAI demonstrates that despite the increased number of contacts between AI companies and governments, it is prepared to release the model.
On the other hand, the White House has made it clear that it is going to manage the development of AI technologies without the need to ban anything.
