Telecom Groups Back FCC Nominee

The nominee by President Donald Trump for an open seat at the FCC is getting wide endorsement from the United States telecommunication sector.

President Donald Trump selected Danielle Thumann Severs, the senior counsel for FCC chairman Brendan Carr, to become an FCC commissioner in a five-year tenure. Should she be confirmed in the Senate, Thumann Severs will fill up one of the vacant seats and give Republicans the majority by three to one on the FCC commission.

Danielle Thumann Severs has been the senior counsel of Brendan Carr since August 2024. Prior to that, she served as Carr’s legal counsel from 2021 to 2023 before working for one year at Crown Castle as an in-house attorney.

Brendan Carr has termed her as an “extraordinary public servant” who contributed towards formulating rules on public safety, broadband access, and consumer affairs.

Industry Groups Call for Quick Confirmation

Various major telecom associations have endorsed this nomination and have demanded rapid action from the Senate.

The National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE), an organization that represents companies providing communication infrastructure services, termed this nomination as "inspired." The organization has also conferred the award of "Regulatory Champion of the Year Award for 2026" to Thumann Severs in recognition of her contributions towards regulatory modernization, infrastructure deployment, spectrum access, and migration to advanced communication technology.

Ajit Pai (former FCC chairman) and President & CEO of CTIA has also endorsed her nomination as he recognized her valuable experience at FCC and the challenges associated with deploying wireless infrastructure.

Grant Spellmeyer, President & CEO, ACA Connects, has congratulated her for her achievements related to broadband deployment and innovations. Her nomination has been supported by Comcast because of her expertise in communication policy and public service.

Republican Majority Could Expand

The FCC was intended to comprise five commissioners, but it has been functioning with only three since June 2025. At present, the commissioners in the agency are two Republicans, namely Brendan Carr and Olivia Trusty, and one Democrat, Anna Gomez.

Thumann Severs' confirmation will lead to a three-to-one majority for the Republicans.

There are certain political worries surrounding the nomination, which mainly came from Senate Democrats. The confirmation procedure might happen in September; however, it will be difficult due to the schedule of the Senate before the midterm elections in November.

Gomez's fate is unclear as well because her term expired in the end of June, but she may stay in the office until December 2027. Blair Levin, policy analyst, warned that dismissing Gomez until Thumann Severs' confirmation will lead to the lack of a quorum.
