Microsoft and PayPal Introduce Copilot Checkout to Allow Customers to Purchase Items within Chat

Microsoft and PayPal Unveil a New Collaborative Shopping Tool
Through artificial intelligence, Microsoft, and PayPal have opened a new door for online shopping. With Copilot Checkout, the integrated feature allows the buyer to search for products, choose, and even pay—all within the Microsoft Copilot AI chat interface.
The introduction of this feature is a significant milestone in the evolution of AI power in the form of tools, consumers getting a smooth and fast method of acquiring their choices while engaging with Copilot. The Copilot is a Microsoft-created gen AI assistant that is often used for different tasks like trip planning, email writing, etc., and now, shopping too.
How Copilot Checkout Works
With Copilot Checkout, a shopper can perform all the actions in the Copilot chat window:
- Discover products: Users can request Copilot for product suggestions and also can look at the items that are available.
- View options: Participating merchant catalogs' products are displayed by Copilot in the chat window.
- Complete purchase: If the user decides to purchase, they can pay instantly and not be directed to another site.
PayPal takes care of the checkout process in several essential ways: merchants' items are displayed, branded checkout pages are handled, guest checkout is supported, and credit card payments are processed. Buyers can use PayPal or other accepted payment methods for their transactions.
On its first day, Copilot Checkout has already made its debut at Copilot.com in the USA, and it will gradually cover more places and devices that support Copilot.
Benefits for Merchants and Shoppers
The new Copilot Checkout offers vendors a fresh digital avenue for interacting with their clients. The whole buying process is taking place through the AI chat, which means there is not much friction between product searches and payments. Microsoft claims that the shopping journeys associated with Copilot result in 53% more purchases within half an hour when compared to other options.
Michelle Gill, general manager for small business and financial services at PayPal, referred to the partnership as a step towards making AI shopping easier and safer at the same time for both sellers and buyers. The partnership takes advantage of PayPal’s agentic commerce services that enable traders to update their listing on the web and get ready for AI-powered shopping experiences.
Stores are optimistic about this technology already. Kyle Dorcas, the head of product management at Ashley Global Retail, said that the use of Copilot for integrating AI shopping assistants allows the buyer to have a comfortable passage through the whole process starting from viewing the inventory to the selecting of the product and finally making the purchase.
Looking Ahead
The latest checkout feature is just one of the many steps taken by Microsoft to introduce more agentic AI tools in retail. The main objective is to make online shopping easier and to allow brands to communicate with customers in more intelligent ways. Some other partners working along the same lines as Microsoft such as Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy sellers are also included in the growing Copilot shopping ecosystem.
With the ongoing rollout of Copilot Checkout, it might alter the perception of online purchases and AI assistance by both consumers and merchants.
